What Makes a Website Convert? 5 Things Most Businesses Get Wrong

Getting people to your website is only half the job. The real question is: what happens once they get there? Website conversion is what turns a visitor into an enquiry, a sale, or a booking, and it’s often the piece businesses overlook while they’re busy chasing more traffic.

Here are five of the most common conversion mistakes we see, and how to fix them.

1. There’s No Clear Call to Action

If a visitor lands on your homepage and isn’t sure what to do next, they’ll leave. Every page should have one obvious next step, whether that’s “Get a Quote,” “Book Now,” or “Contact Us.” Too many options (or none at all) leads to hesitation, and hesitation leads to visitors clicking away.

Fix: Pick one primary action per page and make it visually obvious, above the fold, in contrasting colour, and repeated where it makes sense further down the page.

2. The Website Is Slow

Every second of load time matters. Visitors decide within moments whether to stay or bounce, and a slow site loses people before they even see what you offer. Beyond user frustration, page speed is also a direct Google ranking factor.

Fix: Compress images, minimise unnecessary plugins or scripts, and choose reliable hosting. Even small speed improvements can meaningfully lift conversion rates.

3. It’s Not Mobile-Friendly

More than half of website traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site is hard to navigate, has tiny buttons, or requires pinch-zooming to read text, mobile visitors will leave, and they usually won’t come back.

Fix: Design mobile-first, not as an afterthought. Test every key page and action (forms, buttons, menus) on an actual phone, not just a resized browser window.

4. The Messaging Is About You, Not Them

A lot of websites lead with company history, mission statements, and internal jargon, before ever addressing the visitor’s actual problem. People want to know what’s in it for them, fast.

Fix: Lead with the customer’s problem and how you solve it. Save the “About Us” story for a dedicated page, not the hero section.

5. Forms Ask for Too Much

Long, complicated forms are one of the biggest silent conversion killers. Every extra field is another reason for someone to abandon the process halfway through.

Fix: Only ask for what you genuinely need at this stage. Name, email, and a brief message is often enough to start a conversation, you can gather more detail later.

Small Changes, Real Impact

None of these fixes require a full redesign. Often it’s a handful of targeted changes, a clearer call to action, a faster load time, a shorter form, that make the biggest difference to how many visitors actually become customers.

If you’re getting traffic but not the results you’d expect, it’s worth stepping back and looking at your website through your customer’s eyes rather than your own.
